Author: Köse, Dursun

Annotation: In this comparative study, the speech act “refusing” in Turkish and German was investigated. The theoretical basis of the study is based on Austin's concept of speech act. All linguistic actions such as asking for something, threatening or forgiving someone perform an action through language are defined by the concept of utterance. A member of any language community realizes his communicative intention through utterances with another who is on the same linguistic level. The utterances have the characteristics of a cultural code for the realization of a healthy communication and the mutual understanding of the intentions of the individuals. Communication takes place when both parties know these linguistic and cultural codes. In this article, it has been examined how the transfer of intent occurs in Turkish and German, and whether there are significant differences between languages.
