This article studies the historical origin and study of onomatopoeia, and examines the views of world scholars, especially Chinese linguists, on onomatopoeic words and their role in terminology and morphology. The descriptions of onomatopoeic words in different languages and the main differences between them are shown. General conclusions and author's views on onomatopoeic words are given.
