Annotation: This article focuses on the centuries-old history of the Chinese press, which is rooted deep in antiquity. For many centuries, the Chinese system of the "fourth estate" developed in isolation and apart, having little in common with the European system. However, thanks to a number of significant discoveries that China claims, namely the “four great inventions”: paper, compass, gunpowder and printing, as well as based on the facts set forth in ancient written sources, it can be said with certainty that it is the Chinese civilization that stands at the origins of development of the world system of press and journalism.
