Annotation: The article examines the emergence of the Altaic studies direction and its historical development as an important branch of comparative-historical linguistics. It also analyzes the theories of the relationship of the Japanese language with the Altai languages, and the studies of scientists who support this point of view. In addition, among modern fundamental studies on the comparison of the Altai languages in linguistics from the point of view of the history of science, the works of A. Dibo "Semantic reconstruction in Altai etymology" (Moscow, 1996) and S.A. Starostin "The Altai problem and the origin of the Japanese language" (Moscow, 1991) stand out.
