Annotation: This article explores the determination of leaf area variation and the significance of the leaf area index (LAI) in leguminous crops, particularly in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Based on studies conducted in different countries, both traditional and modern methods—such as digital imaging, optical sensors, drones, and satellite technologies—are analyzed. The findings show that LAI plays a crucial role in assessing plant growth, yield potential, and planning agronomic practices. Moreover, non-destructive methods are highlighted as effective tools for measuring leaf area without harming the plant.
