Annotation: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly common in most engineering fields, and rail transport is no exception. However, due to the many different new terms and meanings associated with them, there is a risk that railway workers, like some other categories, will get lost in this ambiguity and unclear boundaries and therefore will not be able to grasp the real opportunities and potential of machine learning, artificial vision and big data analytics are just some of the most promising approaches related to AI. The purpose of this article is to introduce railway academics and practitioners to the basic concepts and possible applications of AI. To this end, this article presents a structured taxonomy that will help researchers and practitioners understand artificial intelligence techniques, research areas, disciplines and systems both generally and in close relation to railway systems such as autonomous driving, maintenance and traffic control. Important aspects of the ethics and explainability of AI use in railways are also presented. The connection between artificial intelligence concepts and railway subfields has been supported by relevant studies on existing and planned systems to provide some indications of future directions.

Keywords: artificial intelligence, railway transport, machine learning, computer vision, traffic management, predictive maintenance.
