Annotation: The article analyzes the formation and development of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as their influence on the country's internal and foreign policy. It shows that Iran's armed forces consist of the regular army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and significant impact of the Iran-Iraq War on modernization of the country's military system. In addition, the article examines the idea of "Khomeinism," military reforms, the relationship between the army and the religious elite, and highlights Iran's regional military strategy.
