Annotation: Throughout the history of the development of societies, reading, books, libraries have attracted the best minds of mankind. The article discusses the possibilities of familiarization with culture through the mastery of spiritual and moral values, analyzes the role of reading in this process. The trends that influence the decline in the role of reading in the life of the modern young generation are shown: mass culture, information and dehumanization of public consciousness.
