SEMANTIC FEATURES OF LEGAL CONTEXT

Author: Salikhova, Gulnoza Pattakhovna; Paluanova, Khalifa Daribaevna

Annotation: Language and law are inherently intertwined, as legal systems across the world rely on language not merely as a means of communication, but as a fundamental instrument for constructing norms, defining rights, and imposing obligations. A semantic analysis of legal language reveals a distinctive set of features that differentiate it from other functional registers. This article further develops this perspective by providing a comprehensive examination of key semantic characteristics in legal discourse, including precision, ambiguity, polysemy, synonymy, vagueness, archaism, modality, and cultural specificity. Particular attention is given to how these features operate within diverse legal traditions and influence interpretation and application. Through carefully selected examples from different legal systems, the study highlights the intricate interplay between linguistic form and legal meaning. The findings demonstrate that such semantic complexities often generate interpretive challenges for legal practitioners, translators, and scholars, emphasizing the necessity for heightened linguistic awareness and interdisciplinary approaches in legal analysis and practice.

Keywords: law, legal, obligations, rights, ambiguity, legal discourse.
