Annotation: The article considers the text as the main object of linguistic analysis. The key approaches to the definition of the concept of "text" in modern linguistics, its structural and semantic characteristics, as well as the main categories of textuality are highlighted. Special attention is paid to the role of the text as a communicative unit functioning in a specific socio-cultural and pragmatic context. The views of domestic and foreign researchers on the problem of the integrity, coherence and interpretability of the text are analyzed. The results of the research can be used in text theory, discourse analysis, as well as in the practice of teaching linguistic disciplines.
